Win for CHARM with the new ATI Act.

CHARM, through CIVICUS, was key in the passing of the Access to Information (ATI) act in Zambia. The law, which was passed on 15th December 2023, gives power to the citizens to demand unclassified information from the government on any issue deemed of public interest.

This follows years of advocacy, capacity building, and engagement with local and international organisations by CHARM and local and international INGOs. Grassroot organisations supported by CHARM were key in ensuring that the law was enacted.

Media stakeholders already express satisfaction that the act will play a key role in countering misinformation, disinformation, and fake news. At the same time, human rights organisations foreshadow it as an integral tool in pushing for state accountability, fighting corruption, and pushing for good governance, all key pillars to what CHARM advocates for.

We are happy to have been part of the spinners of this wheel of change. The Chart on the left shows various ways in which we participated in making this a reality for the Zambian residents.

Kudos to CHARM and especially the CIVICUS Team!
